Hell is around the corner

July 16th, 2008 by Philipp · 1 Comment

We gather under deck, everyone flooded by adrenaline and a burning thirst for revenge.
Can you imagine that? Worn out bandanas, eye-patches and dangerously flickering knives between the teeth, through which you might understand our polish pirate-songs quite badly.
Now there are only a few moments left until we reach the innocent port of Hel.
We hear the motor growling from the stern of our beloved Lovis, sails are taken down already and the flag is hidden. Of course.
It’s payback-time for all the voyeurs and rubbernecks who romp around our docks, staring on deck, into the habitat, mobile-cameras drawn out. Look at that Mariechen, Marieke or Magda. Look, the dirty clothlines, the beerbottles and now – how picturesque! – they are having their dinner on deck while the sun sets. How romantic!
This time my dear friends there will be a cruel surprise for you.

Unfortunately this remains a sweet fantasy because the weather crossed out our plans, the sky above Hel is coated in a greasy grey and nobody seems to be interested in our arrival this time. Further more the dishes from before are not ready yet and soon the afternoon-shift has to prepare dinner. Well.
Instead of the massacre we start for a short walk into tourist-paradise Hel, which name of course is begging for slogans like “We stay in hell” etc..
Unintelligibly this short-living fun is not yet discovered by the local post-card and t-shirt-production, while In fact it would fit perfectly to the entertainment-factor of this place, where families spend their holidays between crowded beaches, arcade games and plastic-souvenirs.
Our own pleasure does not get fulfilled and it starts to rain, so we are heading back to Lovis.

Climb down the stairs into a delicious smell of frying fish and the heat of the oven.
Nearly everyone is on board. Some sleep, some are gathering in the big room where strange English music comes out of the speakers, preparing dinner, printing photgraphies, discussing film-equipment, reading each others novels, chatting about skin-teints, seal-babies, job-options and places you should live at in Berlin.
Raindrops on the rooftop. This is Lovis-reality tonight.
Cosy.
