Discussion panel in Gdansk in 14th July, 2008

July 14th, 2008 by Agata · 3 Comments

The inauguration lecture of the panel was made by professor of the University of Gdansk Krzysztof Skora, who is also a chief of Hel Marine Station based in Hel Pennisula. For the purpose of high level discussion several experts were invited:

Radoslaw Gawlik (the president of the institution board of Association Eko Unia)

Adam Bogusz (specialist of market development in PGNiG Inc.)

Prof. Hanna Mazur-Marzec (Institut of Oceanography at University of Gdansk).

There were discussed several topics among those which were proposed by the participants of the panel discussion in Rostock. The most important were:

  1. Who should be the main recipient of the ecological education ( in this matter especially about marine ecosystems education)?
  2. Who is the owner of the Baltic Sea?
  3. How can we encourage local authorities to pay more attention to environmental issues?
  4. How can we make the problems of the Baltic Sea more conspicuous and more tactile?
  5. All countries in the Baltic Sea region should try to work intensively on the Baltic Sea Action Plan, so that the common aims, that were formulated should be reached.

The conclusion of this thesis was:

We need more education centres for clearing heads from old and wrong knowledge than sewage plants.

Moreover there were same questions about energy issue and the conclusion was:

From ecological point of view wind energy is good enough, even if for public opinion it spoil a landscape. Even though we should carefully choose the place.

Bilding water cascades stops fish migration.

Solar energy could be the best, but we do not have such a developed technology which could transfer energy around the country.

Nuclear power is not save enough so we should reach for this source in exemity.

The participants of each panel discussion ask questions which are passed on to the panel discussion participants in the next country. Questions asked by Polish participants to be discussed in Kaliningrad are:

  • What is the state of realisation of the Baltic Sea Action Plan and how are you going to realize its outlines?
  • Are you ready to share the database about Gdansk Bay to integrate it with our Polish database?
  • A question for all countries, especially Russia and Lithuania: Are you going to implement ASCOBANS Agreement on the Conservation of Small Cetaceans (a species of sea mammal) and if so, when?
  • Is it possible for Russia (which is not a member of the EU) to integrate with other countries in the net Nature 2000? Then the system would be integrated in the Baltic Sea Basin.
